Spring will be here before you know it and like most of you, my camera will be in my hand a majority of the time. In addition to capturing our family moments, I will be working on several personal photography projects to help hone my skills and challenge me.  Whether you’re battling an extreme heat (or cold), a cramped car ride with the kids or in need of some serious inspiration, these ideas are sure to help get you started and challenge you along the way!
So if you’re in need of a few ideas to get yourself started to check out my list below!

create a photography bucket list

Is there a location or event you’ve always wanted to photograph but you haven’t had the opportunity? Create a photography bucket list and challenge yourself this year. I would suggest thinking of at least 30 things you’ve always wanted to photograph, it doesn’t matter what. I’m sure this list will take some time, but be thoughtful and careful in creating your list. You want to make sure it’s something that can be carried out.

double exposure

Working with medium format, I intend to practice double exposure’s a lot more. This is truly an art form when done correctly. Visit my Pinterest board for inspiration. I certainly look forward to creating gorgeous artwork this spring!

learn your camera in the dark

Learning your camera is very important. During a busy wedding day, you can’t spend too much time trying to figure out your camera settings. It’s too fast pace to slow down (especially when photographing a ceremony). Learn your camera settings!! Spending time with your camera is important, take your equipment into a dark room and practice changing your camera settings in the dark. Once you’re able to do this, you will see a vast improvement in your photography. Having the ability to judge lighting situations and changing your settings without having to stop and look will keep you more focused on the task at hand, allowing you to create beautiful seamless shots.

macro photography/fisheye photography

Good old macro. If you’ve never ventured into the world of macro photography, you should certainly give it a try. Getting up close and personal in a variety of situations this summer is a great way to keep you on your toes while allowing you to view the world from a much different perspective. Don’t have a macro lens, give fisheye a try instead.

single theme

This is where the challenge comes in: themes. If you’re up to the task, challenge yourself with a single theme every week during the spring. Beginning next week, I will be shooting one theme a week on a roll of film. I will be incorporating macro, fisheye, and double exposure into each them as well to challenge myself even more.

A single trip to the store with the kids or an afternoon in the park with your dog. Whatever you can think of doing it!! If you need a little help, how about joining me? Every week I’ll be completing a brand new challenge and sharing on my Instagram pages nicolecaudle.
