Korean language courses get popular

By Jane Lee

Recent research indicates that Spanish and French are commonly learned languages at colleges. However, the Korean language course is growing in popularity at the University of Minnesota.

Sukyung Kim, a professor of the Korean language course, has been teaching for eight years in Minnesota and she had never thought that many students would like to learn Korean, but it’s more than she thought.

Mai Vang, a student, is always interested in Korean because she grew up watching Korean dramas. During the class, she says they do some conversation activities to practice how to say expressions.

Students get into groups of four or five and make stories with the past tense. They write the story in Korean and some students ask questions to Kim to make sure if the story makes sense. After they are done, they read it aloud to share with other groups.

When Kim asks why they want to learn Korean, some of them say because of BTS, which is the name of the Korean boy group. Many of them start learning with a passion, but later, she sees they get more interests in not only the Korean language but also Korean culture and people.
