Interest rate is low these days, 

so Bank needs to make money to maintain the branches, and ATMs. (Fees)

Checking account usually have maintaing limits (like $1500) to waive fees.

Put that money on there to waive charges.

Local Federal union bank doesn't charge any monthly fees.

But, they don't have enough branches or ATMs (very inconvinient).

Choice is yours.

Most banks have minimum deposit amount(Ex. JP Morgan $1,500) to provide 

checking account for no fee. 

One of my friends asked about the specific date that they check the amount of her

account monthly. And then she checks if she has more than $1,500 in the account 

by the date. 

You can call them and have it waived if it's your first time. 

You should definitely look around because many banks do checking account promotion under certain circumstances.
